South Carolina Flag Beaufort SC

Did you know that the South Carolina state flag was named the best design of all 50 states?

They did, and it's really not that surprising.

A few years back, popular search engine website Yahoo! ranked all fifty flags from all fifty states and the Palmetto State was given the #1 spot.

Adopted way back in 1861 when S.C. was just a kid, the South Carolina flag has a popular design that features a Palmetto tree shape and crescent, both in white, laid over an indigo blue field.

YAHOO! said that they “immediately imagine a slice of heaven,” when looking at th South Carolina state flag.

“Perhaps we’re floating on a lake on a warm fall day and we’ve got a Pat Conroy novel, just hitting the midpoint.”

That sounds like Lowcountry life in Beaufort SC for sure.

The original flag design by Colonel William Moultrie actually dates further back to 1775.

The crescent on the flag is often mistaken for the moon, but it was intended to signify the silver emblem on the front of caps worn by military volunteers, and the palmetto tree was a symbol of Colonel Moultrie’s construction of a fort on Sullivan’s Island, up the coast in Charleston, that was lined with palmetto logs to defend against the British in 1776. He was successful, and the cannonballs just bounced off of the sturdy-yet-flexible logs. .
